Peru is the biggest exporter of guano, or bird droppings used as fertiliser. Guano was a prized commodity during the 19th century and heavily traded by European and American traders. Some islands are still dependent on guano for survival as a tradable commodity but global warming (and subsequent reduction in fish population) is threatening the survival of the birds.
