Davit Gareja is a rock-hewn Georgian Orthodox monastery complex in a unique setting on the border with Azerbaijan, about 2.5 hours drive from the capital Tbilisi.

Monastery Lavra was founded by a Syrian father who returned from the Middle East to spread Christianity in Georgia in the 6th century. The watchtower is from the 18th century. Lavra is still used as a monastery today.

Comprising about 15 monasteries spread over a remote area, its uniqueness is heightened by a lunar, semidesert landscape.
