Arc de Triom… oops, I mean Patuxai! Patuxai was built with US-purchased cement that was supposed to have been used for the construction of a new airport. Hence it’s sometimes called ‘the vertical runway’.

Xieng Khuan or Buddha Park, lies 24km south of Vientiane. It’s a small park full of bizarre concrete Buddhist and Hindu sculptures (humans, animals, demons, gods) designed by a yogi-priest who integrated Buddhism and Hinduism. I must say it’s not really my cup of tea.

This is probably my favourite within the park.

The best part of going to the park was finding the public bus that goes there and conversing with a Korean who basically spoke no English.

Entrance to the large pumpkin-shaped monument that has 3 levels – supposed to represent hell, earth and heaven.

COPE (Cooperative Orthotic & Prosthetic Enterprise) has an excellent visitor centre with interesting and informative exhibits about prosthetics and UXO that make them necessary. $75 can buy someone a prosthetic leg.

Vientiane might be short on sights, but not wine sellers!

Maeve (left) and Anne doing their Lao language homework at breakfast! Maeve is originally from Ireland. She is working with a Luxembourg aid agency. Anne is an ABC journalist who is currently on long service leave. It was very kind of them to have me for a few nights. Thanks for the contact, Lynne!

Enjoying some good Lao food with Anne and Maeve.
